BattleBlock Theater is a cartoony arcade platformer made by The Behemoth. If you're unfamiliar with The Behemoth, they are (in my opinion) some of the best game designers out there. They have a way of tying a unique cartoon style, with an off-kilter humor, and strange scenarios. They've accomplished this throughout all of their games, and each one continues to amaze. BattleBlock Theater is their 3rd known project; without spoiling too much story it's about you washing up on an island where you are enslaved to perform in shows which are just you going through a platform stage like Super Mario or Super Meat Boy. I can't say too much more as I want you to sit back and enjoy playing this game when you get the chance.
Those of you who know me or have read/watched any of my other work, know that I absolutely love unique designs and creativity. BattleBlock Theater (like all the other Behemoth games) satisfies that craving for strange, colorful characters. There are literally hundreds of playable models for you to adventure as, there's a fair amount of unique enemies, and there are some pretty creative tools to use as well. You pair this with the amazing color palette, the expert level design, and the wisecracking narrator you got yourself one hell of an aesthetically perfected game.
In terms of controls and mechanics, this game is fairly simple. You run, jump, climb, ride a boat, beat up bad guys, and build your own levels. That about sums it up. It's a platformer, anything more than those is either unnecessary or would change the genre completely. The controls are well mapped and work most of the time. Every once in a while something stupid will happen like you might end up standing on nothing or you might not jump as high as you should've, but little things like that make the game more interesting. I haven't tried the level builder too much so from my experience I haven't run into any issues and seeing all the amazing designs made by others, I can see that it works very very well.
The standard story of BattleBlock Theater is very replayable both because it is simply entertaining between the levels and narrator, but also because replaying levels helps you get the currency needed to unlock more characters to play as. The game also offers a multiplayer mode with a separate set of stages/levels that almost always require two people to get past certain obstacles. And then there are all the levels created by other players around the world, so there is essentially a limitless amount of content for the game.
Is It Fun?
You should all know my answer to this by now, I absolutely love this game. It is extremely fun. The levels are unique and innovative, the characters are well designed, I love the art style; there are too many great aspects of this game. Granted there were a few times I became frustrated at my inability to complete a stage, but that aside there has been nothing but pure enjoyment and entertainment from this game.
OVERALL RATING: 10/10 A++
This game has been out for some time, but is still worth getting. It's available on all non-Nintendo systems and is decently priced. I think it is a must-have for anyone that says they like platformers, arcade games, cartoony games, funny games, or anyone that calls themselves a well-rounded gamer.
As always, I'd love to hear what you thought about my review or the game itself. Feel free to leave a comment or send a message/post on the KeyBound Facebook or Twitter pages.
